Portland Magazine has published the first review of Zen Chinese Bistro.
But the Peking Duck ($25), plenty enough for a satisfying dinner for two, is what knocks us out. A half duck deftly sliced comes on a gorgeous platter with fresh moo shu pancakes, delicious plum sauce, sliced cucumbers, and scallions. Theatrically, one of the servers shows up at our table and carefully creates the wraps for us–a welcome touch!
Ran into ZEN for a carryout General Tso’s lunch. I was in a hurry and dying for Chinese food! I expected the same ‘ole thing in the way of Chinese breaded chicken, but at ZEN, I was pleasantly surprised when my take-out meal really tasted FRESH — the fried rice had a great grilled flavor, the Tso sauce was not from a jar but clearly a mix of tangy soy sauce, sweetness & spices. The chicken was white meat, crispy on the outside & not too saucy. The spring roll was crispy and not greasy. I keep thinking of the word FRESH to describe it. By magic, ZEN has managed to breath new life into your standard greasy, heavy Chinese take-out. Can’t wait to dine-in at the great, open space that was formerly District. Hopefully they will also consider delivery soon! LOVE!
