About Portland Food Map

Portland Food Map launched in 2007 as a simple directory of the local food community. A new Filipino restaurant called Barkada (@barkada A new Filipino restaurant called Barkada (@barkadamaine) is under development. Chefs Nicole and Ben Bowers and business partners Margaret and Luka Dow hope to launch a Barkada food truck this summer and a Filipino fast casual restaurant with the same name this fall at 25 Pearl Street. At the restaurant they plan to serve “authentic Filipino cuisine, offering a mix of classic dishes and modern takes” with options like lechon liempo, grilled meats, wok-cooked specialties. The team shared that their “goal is to provide a welcoming, casual space where customers can enjoy bold, comforting Filipino flavors.” The menu on the food truck will lean into street-style, grab-and-go food like Filipino tacos and nachos which they plan to serve in Dorito bags. Nicole and Ben Bowers will be the chefs for Barkada. Nicole Bowers is originally from the Philippines. She and Ben Bowers met while attending the Institute of Culinary Education in NY. They’ve worked in Michelin-starred restaurants including for Daniel Boulud. Prior to moving to Maine they worked as private chefs in Florida. Tomaso’s Pizza and Burger Bar (@tomasos.bar) is Tomaso’s Pizza and Burger Bar (@tomasos.bar) is scheduled to open on Tuesday at 4 pm. It is located at 51 Wharf Street in the space formerly occupied by The Rathskeller. This new Tomaso’s is a sister restaurant to Tomaso’s Canteen on Hampshire Street. Sam Minervino of Samuel’s along with business partner Scott Olsen will be serving a menu that includes 10 inch pizzas, burgers like the Chili Cheese Smash (double smash burgers with sauteed onions, jalapenos, chili and beer cheese sauce), wings, chicken sandwiches, veggie burgers and red snappers. The menu also includes fish and chips, fish tacos, an assortment of salads and apps and sides. Nearly everything on the menu is under $20. The draft and canned beer list includes national and local brands. Tomaso’s will also have a small selection of wines by the glass, “combo” drinks like the Canjello (Budweiser and a jello shot) and some cocktails like an Old Port Mule (Ice Pick vodka, ginger beer and lime) and a Tomaso’s Collins. Cargo Pizza Company (@cargopizzacompany) is opened Cargo Pizza Company (@cargopizzacompany) is opened on Thursday. The food truck turned restaurant is located at 1053 Forest Ave in the space formerly occupied by Falafel Time. Cargo is serving a menu of “Neo-Neapolitan/New Haven-style” pizza, smash burgers, and apps like mozzarella sticks, fries, and wings for lunch and dinner. Their range of specialty pizzas includes a Bee Sting (red sauce, parmesan, jalapeno, peperoni and hot honey) and a Bianca (garlic oil, parmesan, spinach, ricotta) as well as Maggarita, BBQ Chicken and 11 other options. Pizzas come in 10 and 14 inch sizes. In the mornings Cargo also has grab and go breakfast sandwiches and coffee to go. The restaurant will initially be open Wednesday through Sunday with plans to expand operations to seven days a week. Alex Marchesini has leased 111 Middle Street where Alex Marchesini has leased 111 Middle Street where he plans to open a 20-seat wine bar called Franciska (@franciskawinebar). The space is under renovation and Marchesini hopes to launch the business in early April. The wine program at Franciska will highlight small producers from Argentina. Marchesini plans to showcase the diversity of Argentinian wines beyond the Malbec grape varietal that the country is best known for. He shared that his goal is to offer an “innovative selection that surprises and delights [with] a fresh perspective on South American wines.” The wine list will also include some American wines as well as Old World wines from Italy, Spain, and France. The menu is still under development. It will feature Argentine Bodegón-style cuisine which often includes options like Spanish tortilla made with potatoes and onions, gnocchi, a schnitzel like dish called milanesa, picadas, and desserts like flan and soft cheese with membrilllo. Marchesini shared, “Franciska is a wine bar dedicated to Argentine Bodegón cuisine, a culinary tradition deeply rooted in Spanish and Italian influences brought by immigrants to Buenos Aires at the turn of the century. In our intimate 20-seat space in Portland’s Old Port, we bring people together over thoughtfully crafted dishes made with New England-sourced ingredients and house-made specialties. Our mission is to create a warm, welcoming space where good food, good wine, and good company come together.” Marchesini has worked in the industry initially as a wine professional and then as a restauranteur and hospitality consultant. In Portland, Oregon, he co-founded Arden and Thelonius Wines. In California, he was a partner at Varro in Venice alongside Bill Chait and chef Leo Lanussol, and in Los Angeles he was a partner in the launch of The Hideout. In Maine he’s worked as a consultant at the Camden Harbour Inn, a Relais & Châteaux property in the Midcoast. 111 Middle Street was most recently occupied by Cabana which closed in late 2023. The building owner is seeking someone to lease the Public Market House and develop the food hall as an incubator space for new food businesses. The 8,064 sq ft space (photos 2-5) spans the 1st and 2nd floors and has a commercial kitchen in the basement. The well-loved Jamaican restaurant Yardie Ting already occupies part of the first floor with the remainder of the building vacant and already built out with kitchen infrastructure needed for new businesses. 28 Monument Square is listed at $12/sq ft (NNN). The building has witnessed over a century of history back to when City Hall was in what was then Market Square (6th photo). In the late 19th and early 20th centuries there was a succession of clothing stores like the Talbot Company in the building (7th photo). In 1916 the Wong family took over the first two floors and opened the Oriental Restaurant that December (photo 8-9). Gary Libby’s article on Portland’s Chinese restaurants records that the Oriental possessed an “elegant ambiance” featuring teak wood furniture, handwoven tapestries, and 21 private dining areas. In 1930 the Press Herald reported “[b]owing to the present day demand of giving patrons the opportunity to dance between courses” the dining room was expanded to the second and third floors each with its own orchestra. For most of the 20th Century (1947-2004) the building was home to The Surplus Store (11th photo) which sold clothing and camping equipment. It transitioned into its current form as the Public Market House in 2006 providing a new home for businesses that departed the original Public Market as it shut down. For nearly two decades it’s been a multivendor space for markets, bakeries, sandwich shops, and mini restaurants. The property owner would like to bring it back to being a vibrant food hall.
