Review of Carmen at the Danforth

Carmen at the Danforth received 4 stars from today’s review in the Maine Sunday Telegram.

Carmen at The Danforth offers marvelous Latin-inspired twists on familiar items while introducing ingredients seldom found on Maine menus. The restaurant’s intimate, elegant setting in a historic inn in Portland’s West End makes it hardly a spot you’d expect to find this delicious and fascinating cuisine. But that’s all part of the magic.

Bastille Day Feast Remembered

Wines; Tasted! has posted a report on the Bastille Day Feast that took place in Cape Elizabeth over the weekend.

It was at some point about 7:30 Saturday morning as we were digging the pit and I was attacked by ants that I asked Philippe why we were doing this again?  “Philippe, What are we doing this for again?  Why can’t we just pay $48 and eat a lot of food? Working around the clock in the sun and bugs to pull this off is ridiculous!”  We did pull it off, but it was an almost ridiculous string of mis-adventures that we had to overcome.

Greek Heritage Festival

The Bangor Daily News has published a report on the Greek Heritage Festival.

The Greek Food Festival, now in its 30th year by the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church on Pleasant Street, has become more than just the church’s biggest annual fundraiser. It’s a key component in keeping alive Greek cultural traditions, with roots dating back hundreds of years and thousands of miles, in Maine’s largest city.

Prepping for the Greek Heritage Festival

The Portland Phoenix has published an article about all the prep work that goes into creating the food for the Greek Heritage Festival.

There will be marinated and grilled lamb souvlaki (kabobs), rice pilaf, Greek salad, spanakopita (spinach pie), moussaka (eggplant casserole), pastitsio (Greek lasagna), dolmades (stuffed grape leaves), and an assortment of desserts, most of which non-Greeks can get nowhere else in Portland except on these three days. I spent a couple hours with the pastry team last week as they prepared for the event.

The festival starts on Thursday and runs through Saturday night.
