This Week’s Events: Ada’s, Non-Alcoholic Beer Dinner, Cider 101 Class

Monday – Little Giant is hosting an Ada’s pop-up dinner, and Solo Italiano is holding a sold out Pig Roast in conjunction with Gradis’ Cuitta.

Tuesday – there will be an Italian wine dinner at Tipo.

Wednesday – a 5-course dinner with non-alcoholic beer pairings in collaboration with the Athletic Brewing Co is taking place at Little Giant, and  the Monument Square Farmers’ Market is taking place.

ThursdayThe Porthole and Evo are both holding wine dinners, there will be a Trillium Beer dinner at Hugo’s, and there will be a whiskey blending workshop at New England Distilling.

Saturday – the Deering Oaks Farmers’ Market is taking place.

Sunday – The Righteous Russet (aka Sean Turley) will be teaching a Cider 101 class at Lorne Wines in Biddeford.

Heirloom Apple Tasting

The Maine Sunday Telegram has published an article about the 6th Annual Heirloom Apple Tasting.

Apple enthusiast Sean Turley and Anestes Fotiades, the creator of the online Portland Food Map, offer a more closely guided tour of New England apples as part of their Heirloom Apple Tasting held annually on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, formerly Columbus Day, in Portland. This year’s event sold out within hours of being announced on Instagram and featured 213 dessert (best eaten raw), cooking (best in pies) and cider (best in fermented beverages) apples.

This Week’s Events: Workshops, Mayoral Food Forum, Cider Dinner, Diva Dinner, Halloween Cupcake Decorating

Tuesday – Kate McCarty and Sean Turley are teaching an apple preservation workshop at Fork Food Lab, and a whiskey blending workshop is being held at Stroudwater Distillery.

Wednesday – the Portland Food Council is holding a Mayoral Food Forum, there will be a wine tasting at Maine & Loire, and the Monument Square Farmers’ Market is taking place.

Thursday – Evo is serving 5-course Slovenian/Northern Italian wine dinner, and the local barista community is holding their monthly Latte Art Competition at Coffee by Design on Diamond Street.

Friday – Little Giant and Shacksbury  and teaming up to hold a 6-course Cider Dinner, and the Other Side Diner is holding a Prime Rib Dinner night as part of their monthly dinner series.

Saturday – the Deering Oaks Farmers’ Market is taking place.

Sunday – Primo is hosting a Diva Dinner with an all female chef line-up that includes: Melissa Kelly, Ilma Lopez, Nancy Silverton, Jody Adams, Kathleen Blake, Emily Luchetti, and Two Fat Cats is teaching a Halloween Cupcake Decorating Class For Kids.

6th Annual Heirloom Apple Tasting

The 6th Annual Heirloom Apple Tasting took place yesterday. This wonderful event brought together 213 apples from 21 orchards in 4 states with New England ciders from Bent Bough, Rocky Ground, Cornish and Citizen, and heirloom apple dishes by Ilma Lopez at Chaval, Josh Berry at Union and Krista Kern Desjarlais at The Purple House – all under one roof at The Oyster Shop on Washington Ave.

The focal point of the event was a guided tasting by Sean Turley (aka The Righteous Russet) who led guests through a tasting of a diverse range of 36 apple varieties from the colonial era to the modern day, hailing from England, France, Kazakhstan and America. Sean provided insight into the science and lore of apples and tasting notes and lineages of the fruit presented.

Tickets for next year’s apple tasting will go on sale in September.

Sunday – it’s the last day of Harvest on the Harbor.
