Barr Hill Spirits Tasting

The Blueberry Files has posted a report on the recent Portland Spirit Society Barr Hill spirits tasting.

We learned about the process of making the vodka and gin, both made from honey (which must be so expensive). The vodka is distilled until it has a neutral flavor, while the gin has some honey added back into it, giving it a lovely floral characteristic. The Tom Cat gin is “rested” gin that is aged in charred oak barrels, giving it a most delicious smoky sweetness. It’s one of my new favorite craft spirits.

Lone Pine Opening Tasting Room

The Press Herald has published an article on Lone Pine Brewing,

While Madden was honing his brewing chops, Paul was working in the music industry in Boston, and after college, he accepted a job in the industry in L.A. When Paul visited Maine, he and Madden would meet up for a beer and dream about starting a brewery.

After a few of these meetings, the two friends reached a crossroads; it was time to make this dream a reality or move on with their lives.

Release of Straight To Black:Out

This Saturday, Liquid Riot is releasing Straight To Black:Out, their barrel aged Russian Imperial Stout.

Straight To Black:Out is a bold and rich Russian Imperial Stout. We aged two batches, one in a bourbon barrel and one in a port wine barrel, to display the effects that types of barrels can have on beer. The port barrel was sourced from Fenestra Winery, a small port producer in Livermore, California. The bourbon barrel was sourced from Buffalo Trace, the legendary bourbon producer in Frankfurt, Kentucky.
