Wednesday — the semifinalist nominees for this year’s James Beard Foundation awards will be released.

FridayBrowne Trading will be at Rising Tide for a beer and salmon tasting, and North Star Sheep Farm will be at The Farm Stand for a lamb and wine tasting.

Saturday — Ned Swain is leading a Wine Wise natural wine walk, it’s the grand opening of Maine Craft Distilling’s Freeport tasting room, Viva Lebowski is taking place at Easy Day, and the Winter Farmers’ Market is taking place.

Neptune: Where to Eat Today

Many restaurants and other food shops have closed due to the storm, but not all. Here’s a growing list of the eateries that plan to be open today, keeping us all well fed despite the white stuff:

  • Union Bagel, where I picked my breakfast of a double toasted everything bagel with butter.
  • Arcadia is open until 10 pm, $5 drafts.
  • Becky’s Diner is open.
  • Bier Cellar is open noon – 6.
  • Black Cat Coffee opened at 7:30 this morning.
  • Brian Boru is open.
  • Bucks Naked BBQ is open all day.
  • Central Provisions is now open.
  • CBD will be opening their shops on Diamond and Congress Streets at 10:30.
  • DiMillo’s will be opening their lounge and bar starting at 11.
  • Dobra will open at noon.
  • Eventide plans to open at 11am for brunch.
  • Five Fifty-Five is open for both brunch and dinner.
  • Frog & Turtle will be open for brunch.
  • Gelato Fiasco opens at 3pm.

This Week’s Events: Owl & Whale, Carlo Huber, Valentine’s Day (updated)

owlandwhale_logoMondayOwl & Whale will be taking over the bar at Outliers Eatery serving a menu of tequila and mezcal based cocktails.

Thursday — there will be a wine tastings at Rosemont on Brighton Aurora Provisions and The Corner General Store (115 Middle St), and a beer and cheese tasting at the Public Market House.

Friday —Ned Swain from Devenish will be leading a Valentine’s wine tasting at Rosemont on Commercial St, and Viennese wine importer Carlo Huber will be the guest speaker at an Austrian wine event.

Saturday — there will be a wine tasting at LeRoux Kitchen, and the Winter Farmers’ Market is taking place.

Valentine’s Day — times running out to make plans for your Valentine’s Day date. Here’s a selection of dinners and other V-Day events for you to choose from.

  • Allagash, Beer Hearts Chocolate beer and chocolate tasting, $15 per person.
  • Artemisa Cafe, 4-course dinner, $65 per person.
  • Bao Bao, 5-course dinner, $48 per couple.
  • Black Dinah will be opening a pop-up shop at their new space in Westbrook (869 Main St) on February 13 and 14, noon – 6 pm.
  • Boone’s, choose between an all-lobster 4-course dinner for $114 per couple, or a 4-course menu with a variety of options for $55 per person.
  • Bramhall will be serving a special menu.
  • Congress Squared, special menu served on both the 13th and 14th.
  • David’s Opus Ten, 9-course dinner with wine pairings for $150 per person.
  • Elsmere BBQ, 4-course, $50 per person.

  • Sur Lie, serving their regular menu and a special chef’s tasting menu for $65 per person.

ThursdayRising Tide and Ebb & Flow are collaborating on a 5-course beer dinner, the Brighton Ave Rosemont is holding a cider tasting (with ciders from Vermont, New Hampshire, Spain, France, Chile) and Bao Bao is hosting a Hitachino tap takeover.

Friday — there will be a wine tasting at the West End Deli.

Saturday — Space Gallery is screening the movie The Search for General Tso followed by a talk with the director, Maine & Loire is holding a sparkling wine tasting, Dobra is teaching a class on the six classes of tea, Rosemont and Piccolo are working together on a cooking class, Wine Wise is leading a wine and chocolate walk, and the Winter Farmers’ Market is taking place.

Sunday — the 21st Annual Chowder and Chilli Challenge is taking place, and Owl & Whale (facebook, website) will be at Maine Craft Distilling’s Freeport tasting room for a product demo.

Valentine’s Day — restaurants have started announcing their plans for Valentine’s Day. I’ll be adding to this list and reposting it on a weekly basis now through then.

The winter/spring semester of MECA’s Culinary Arts program begins this week. Here’s the full list of classes:

bwbWednesday — Outliers is serving a 5-course dinner featuring Willamette Valley wines with special guest Rob Stuart from from R. Stuart Wines.

Thursday — The Farm Stand is holding natural wine tasting , Rosemont is also holding a wine tasting, there will be a wine and cheese tasting at the Public Market House, the Bier Cellar is hosting an Allagash tasting, and the 16th annual Brew Pub Cup is taking place.

Friday — Novare Res is holding a Brewers Without Borders event to raise funds for the Hof ten Dormaal brewery is Belgium that was recently damaged by a fire,  and The Farm Stand is holding another wine tasting.

Saturday —  Maine & Loire is holding their first wine tasting, and the Winter Farmers’ Market is taking place.

Tuesday — Local Sprouts is hosting the Local Foods Networking Breakfast.

Wednesday — Space Gallery is screening Growing Local followed by a discussion with the director, Baxter Brewing owner Luke Livingston will be speaking at Peleton LabsThe Corner Room is holding a  wine dinner and Black Tie is teaching a cooking class.

Thursday — it’s the first night of the 2015 Ice Bar, the Thirsty Pig is hosting a rlease party for episode 4 of Local Brew TV, and GMRI is hosting a talk on How Climate Change is Affecting Fish and People by scientist Andy Pershing and Kathy Mills.

Friday — it’s the second night of the Ice Bar.

Saturday — Allagash is having a bottle release for Emotional Honey,  it’s the last night of the Ice Bar, the Portland On Tap beer festival is taking place as is the Winter Farmers’ Market.

Sunday — The Good Table is holding a 5-course dinner made with 5 local honeys paired with mead, wine, beer, and Rosemont Market cooking a Grange Bean Suppah.
