Online TV show Tastemade will be in town next week to film episode about Portland lobster rolls. They’ll be at Bite into Maine on Thursday (11:30 – 1). They also plan to visit Eventide and perhaps Portland Lobster Company.

Hank Shaw: Duck & Goose Dinner at Beale Street
Hank Shaw, author and the 2013 Jame Beard award-winner for Best Food Blog (Hunter Angler Gardener Cook), will be at Beale Street Barbeque in Bath on October 30. Shaw and Beale Street chef Michael Quigg will be cooking a “duck & goose with an emphasis on versatility and an eye to the October hunting and harvest seasonal food Maine has to offer.”
Mainely Burgers & Bite into Maine to Appear on Eat Street (Updated)
The Cooking Channel show Eat Street (website, facebook) will be in Portland this weekend. On Sunday they’ll be filming with Mainely Burgers. You can get in on the action by visiting Mainely Burgers at “108 St. John St in Portland from 11:30-2”.
And on Monday from 12-3 they’ll be in Fort Williams Park filming with Bite into Maine.

Wednesday — the Old Port Wine Merchants is holding a Vermouth tasting to “demystify this timeless beverage”, the Makers Market is taking place at the Urban Farm Fermentory, and the Monument Square Farmers Market is taking place.
Thursday — Chris McClay from Modern Vegan Cooking School is the featured chef for the weekly Twilight Dinner at Turkey Hill Farm, and The Great Lost Bear will be showcasing beer from Shipyard Brewing.
Friday — it’s the start of the 3rd Annual Portland Brew Festival and there will be a wine tasting at Rosemont.
Saturday — the Portland Brew Festival continues, there will be another wine tasting at Rosemont, and the Deering Oaks Farmers Market is taking place.

Inaugural Makers Market
Maine Today has published a report on the first Makers Market that took place this week at the Urban Farm Fermentory.
There were herbal tinctures, handmade soap, vegan and gluten-free energy bars, wild mushroom-growing kits and a brand new bottled tea. A jeweler and potter displayed their wares alongside various art objects, while a few steps away, a table held fresh vegetables and cheeses.
Anniversaries: Tandem & The Honey Exchange
A pair of local establishments are celebrating their anniversaries this week:
- Tandem Coffee opened 1 year ago today. To celebrate they’ll be serving free Holy Donut donuts and all coffee drinks are priced at $2.
- To celebrate their 2nd anniversary, this Saturday The Honey Exchange will be having “sweet and savory tastes, soft drinks, prizes and raffles, birthday cake, and a pinata”.

What looked like empty warehouse space was instead seen as an opportunity by the tenants of 200 Anderson St. Spearheaded by Eli Cayer and the Urban Farm Fermentory, 200 Anderson St. will be the home of a new “Makers Market.” Wednesday will be the first of the Makers Markets that will be held, and will include farmers offering produce, meats and diary products; artists; crafts people; and food trucks, Cayer said
and the 25th anniversary of the Portland House of Pizza.
Long a neighborhood staple, the original PHOP opened two doors down from the current 1359 Washington Ave. location and was closer to the intersection of Allen Avenue. “It was real tough on parking, and entering and exiting,” said General Manager Jason Cote, 31. “When the restaurant moved to the new building, there was a huge remodeling project changing an old bank vault into our office and making a dirty and dated ’80s dining room clean and relevant.”

Thursday — El Rayo is sponsoring the weekly Twilight Dinner at Turkey Hill Farm, and The Great Lost Bear will be showcasing beer from Funky Bow Brewery.
Friday — BiBo’s Madd Apple Cafe is holding a wine dinner.
Saturday — Bier Cellar will be having a tasting of Allagash “Curieux and Bourbon Black, alongside their base beers, Tripel and Black”, and the Deering Oaks Farmers Market is taking place.
Sunday — Wine Wise is leading a Piedmont sail in Casco Bay aboard the Frances, Rosemont is holding their 2nd Annual Pomodoropalooza, and Hugo’s will be preparing an Outstanding in the Field dinner at Thirty Acre Farm in Whitefield, Maine.

Joe Yonan Book Signing
Rabelais and Rosemont are co-hosting Joe Yonan, author of Eat Your Vegetables for a book signing this Sunday at Rosemont Produce on Commercial Street. Yonan is the Food and Travel Editor of the Washington Post.
Yonan spent sometime in Maine last year while he was working on his book.
Portland Cap N Stem Co.
Portland Cap N Stem Company is a new company that’s raising mushrooms for culinary and medicinal use. It’s run by an “Italian Architect and a Norwegian Artist”. Their plan is to sell their products to local restaurants and at farmers markets. They will be one of the vendors at the new Maker’s Market (August 21, 5-9 pm) being run by the Urban Farm Fermentory.
