This Week’s Events: Graze, Twilight, Beer Festival, Bastille Day

Wednesday — Black Tie is catering one of their Graze Dinners at Pineland Farms, and the Monument Square Farmers Market is taking place.

Thursday — there will be a wine and cheese tasting at the Public Market House, The Great Lost Bear is showcasing beer from Southern Tier Brewing and Jonah Fertig from Local Sprouts will be the guest chef at this week’s Twilight Dinner at Turkey Hill Farm.

Saturday — a craft beer festival is taking place on the Maine State Pier, Novare Res is holding an all day celebration of Dogfish Head Brewing, there will be wine and food tasting at Rosemont Produce, and the Deering Oaks Farmers Market is taking place.

Sunday — The Language Exchange is holding a Bastille Day dinner at Turkey Hill Farm to benefit Cultivating Community, Petite Jacqueline is serving a special 4-course meal in honor of Bastille Day, and Wine Wise is hosting a wine and oyster sail in Casco Bay.

10 Years at 555

In his latest post The Golden Dish takes a walk down Portland’s restaurant memory lane and describes Five Fifty-Five’s recent 10-year anniversary dinner.

The rest, of course, is history and last Friday the restaurant celebrated its 10 year anniversary with a special 10-course dinner to commemorate the event.  I’d like to chronicle the dinner here rather than offer a typical critique and to look back at some of our old stars and current tastemakers.

This Week’s Events: 4th of July Fireworks and Concert, Mainely Treats, Farmers Markets

Tuesday — there will be a wine tasting at Rosemont.

Wednesday — the Monument Square Farmers Market is taking place.

Thursday — nearly everyone in Portland will be on the Eastern Promenade for fireworks and a Independence Day concert by the Portland Symphony. The Mainely Treats food truck will be launching that evening at the Eastern Prom.

Friday — there will be a wine tasting at the West End Deli. First Friday Art Walk is taking place and restaurants will be busy so be sure to make reservations at your favorite spot in advance.

Saturday — there will be wine tastings at LeRoux Kitchen and Browne Trading, and the Deering Oaks Farmers Market is taking place.

Pocket Picnic

The June edition of Pocket Brunch took place today at Bresca and the Honey Bee in New Gloucester. Krista Kern Desjarlais and Erik Desjarlais were guest chefs for the picnic themed meal.

  • Premeal – financier with plum and goat ricotta, and bacon-wrapped Deuben-dog in a blanket of deviled eggs accompanied by cucumber, dry gin and Aperol cooler
  • Snack Board – Hahn’s End Blue, York Hill Capriano, Fermin Salchichon Iberico, Wild Boar cacciatorini, Fermin Chorizo Iberico accompanied by UFF’s Buchanan Hard Cider
  • Lunch Basket – buttermilk fried chicken, fennel slaw, black Sabbathday potato salad, pickled watermellon accompanied by Oxbow Farmhouse Pale Ale
  • Sweet Basket – blueberry crumb pie with lemon buttermilk sherbert, and strawberry shortcake with basil ice cream accompanied by Twin Vines Vinho Verde

Tandem Coffee was also on-hand with pour overs and their wonderful malt ice coffee.

Wednesday — the Bier Cellar is holding a tasting with North Coast Brewing where they’ll be debuting a collaboration North Coast did with Deschutes Brewing and Rogue, Black Tie is catering a Graze Farm Dinners at Pineland in New Gloucester, and the Monument Square Farmers Market is taking place.

Thursday — Cultivating Community is holding their first Twilight Dinner of the season, it’s the first day of the Greek Heritage Festival, Blue Rooster and Portland Hunt & Alpine Club are collaborating on a New England Summer Dinner, Bard is holding the monthly Latte Art Throwdown, there will be a wine and cheese tasting at the Public Market House, and The Great Lost Bear will be showcasing beers from Greenflash Brewing.

Friday — Five Fifty-Five is celebrating their 10th Anniversary with a 10-course wine dinner, it’s the second day of the Greek Heritage Festival, Rising Tide, Bunker Brewing, Urban Farm Fermentory and Tandem are coordinating on June’s Last Friday event (noon to 7pm) in East Bayside. Love Cupcakes will be at Rising Tide and Small Axe will be at Bunker.

Saturday — the 5th Annual Strawberry Festival is taking place in Cape Elizabeth, it’s the last day of the Greek Heritage Festival, and the Deering Oaks Farmers Market is taking place.

Sunday — the June edition of Pocket Brunch is taking place, Krista Kern Desjarlais and Erik Desjarlais are the guest chefs for Pocket Picnic. Tickets for the June Pocket Brunch sold out in less than 2 hours.

PPH Festival Round-up

Tuesday — a Local Foods Networking Breakfast is taking place at Local Sprouts.

Wednesday — Wine Wise is leading a Sparkling Wine Walk, Black Tie is hosting the first of their Graze Farm Dinners at Pineland in New Gloucester, and the Monument Square Farmers Market is taking place.

Thursday — The Great Lost Bear will be showcasing beers from The Festival, there will be a wine tasting at Aurora Provisions, El Corazon will be the featured food truck at Rising Tide, and Bier Cellar is hosting Prairie Artisanal Ales from Oklahoma and Allagash for a pre-Festival tasting.

Friday — the first tasting session of The Festival is taking place, Allagash is holding a Victoria Ale premiere party at the Victoria Mansion, and Sebago is releasing the 2013 edition of their Single Batch Series beer, Hop Swap.

Saturday — the next two tasting sessions of The Festival are taking place as is the 9th Annual Vegetarian Food Festival and the 2nd Annual Maine Hot Wing Cook-off Challenge, Mainely Burgers will be the featured food truck at Rising Tide and the Deering Oaks Farmers Market is taking place.

Sunday — the 8th Annual Taste of the Nation is taking place, Rising Tide is hosting a Brewers Brunch to celebrate the bottle launch of their new beer Lyra, Hugo’s is the featured restaurant at Flanagan Farms in Buxton, Nosh and Oxbow are teaming up to put on the NoshBow Block Party on Oak Street.
