South Portland photographer Stacey Cramp has published a 2009 calendar called Savoring Maine. Each month features one of Cramps beautiful photos and a recipe from a Maine “food expert”. Jay Villani from Local 188 provided the parsnip and leek tortilla recipe for March and Abby Harmon from Caiola’s contributed the apple salad recipe for the month of October. The calendar on sale at Rabelais Books on Middle Street.

In today’s Press Herald there’s an article about the steps being taken by “lobstermen, dealers, grocery stores and restaurants” to increase sales of lobster and in doing so support the lagging price.

Woodpile Photo Contest
Matt’s Wood Roasted Organic Coffee in Pownal is running a photography competition. To enter you need to send in a photo of your woodpile by midnight November 15—no that’s not a typo, it’s really a woodpile photo comptetion. According to Matt’s site, the photos will be judged on “image composition and creativity, the skill and industriousness of the stacker, our own whim and state of indigestion, and the like.” The winner gets a free supply of Matt’s coffee beans. Kate’s is produced by the Patry family in Old Orchard Beach. Gifford’s was also a winner at the Expo taking home first prize in the Sherbert category and second place in the Chocolate Ice Cream category.

CSFs & Brandy in the News
Today’s paper has an article about community supported fisheries in Maine. There is a groundfish CSF in Port Clyde and a lobster CSF in Freeport; there’s the possibility of a CSF being established here in Portland. Also in today’s paper was a report that sales of Allen’s Coffee Brandy topped 1 million bottles during the state’s 2007 fiscal year.
