The finishing touches are going up at the Kon Asian Bistro construction site on Brighton Ave. They’ve had a “Now Hiring” sign up for quite some time and the City Council gave the greenlight to the liquor license back in December. The latest info I have is that they hope to open in June.

Luna Rossa
An article in today’s Press Herald reports that Luna Rossa “should open by early summer” and when it does the kitchen will be run by Antonio Bruno “who has worked in New York City and grew up on Capri”. Luna Rossa is under construction at 188 Middle Street at the old location of The Pavilion nightclub.
The space is being converted into an Italian restaurant, a banquet facility and a retail mall. The indoor galleria concept is modeled after the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
The restaurant will offer entertainment by Dueling Piano Services, which provides talent to the New York New York Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The performances are a “high-energy blend of singalong and comedy,” according to the company’s Web site.
Wasabi?
The signs in the window at 7 Exchange Street that until recently stated that Wasabi was “coming soon” have been replaced by these For Lease signs from Cardente Real Estate. It’s looking doubtful that Wasabi is still in the works.
Veranda Thai Expanding
Veranda Thai is expanding across the street into the space that had been occupied by Jubba Internet Cafe.
Luna Construction Update
The site for Luna Rossa at 188 Middle Street has cleaned up quite a bit since I last posted a photograph of it. The restaurant has one-pager website, there’s been a print ad or two promising valet parking and a “dueling piano lounge”, and table linens are out but no word yet on an opening day.
A Logo for El Rayo
The exterior of El Rayo has been transformed with a new coat of paint and this large-scale replica of the restaurant’s logo. The restaurant is still under construction but they are hiring staff so an opening day is likely not too far in the future.
Dinner at Paciarino
Paciarino is appearing before the City Council on Monday to apply for a liquor license with outdoor seating. Provided all goes well they hope to start serving dinner on Friday May 8.
Bar Installation at Grace
Tivi Design has posted photos of the new bar they’ve built and installed at Grace. The circular bar has a canopy of glass that echoes the window design of the historic Chestnut Street Church. Grace is still under construction, they plan on opening for business this summer. Eric Simeon is coming on board as their Executive Chef.
Under Construction Updates
Old Port Wine Merchants is building a new retail space at 221 Commercial street and will be moving out of their space on Fore street relatively soon.
According to a report from Justin Henry’s Green Galoshes, Viet Bangkok Cuisine is up for sale and plans to close if no buyer is found within the next month.
Good News Portland has a news brief about the re-opening of the renovated Porthole.
A new liquor license for Binga’s Wingas is on the agenda for Monday’s City Council meeting. Binga’s location at the corner of Deering and Congress was the site of a fire back in November of last year. Binga’s plans on opening their new Portland restaurant at 50 Wharf street in the space formerly occupied by Cake.
Grace will also be at the City Council meeting Monday for their liquor license application. A sample menu for the restaurant (located on page 163 of the agenda) provides a first look at what Chef Eric Simeon has planned.
Under Construction: The Salt Exchange
Martha and Charlie Bryon, the owners of The Salt Exchange, sent along this photo of their work site on Commercial street. The Bryons write that the kitchen will lead by Jacob Jascinski, who’s resume includes the White Barn Inn. They hope to open their “small plates endeavor” in late May with “regional ‘New American’ cuisine designed for sampling and sharing”.
As you might be able to discern from the blueprint (Commercial street is shown on the right) the plan calls for a bar, seating for 50+ and tables on the sidewalk.
