There’s a good article in the Food section of today’s Press Herald about the growing recognition of artisanal cheese making in Maine. This Sunday the Maine Cheese Guild is holding the 2nd annual Open Creamery Day – a chance to visit local cheese makers and see them in operation.
Kate's Homemade Butter
According to a report in The Maine Mouth, Kate’s Homemade Butter won first prize in the Unsalted Butter category at the 2008 World Dairy Expo. Kate’s is produced by the Patry family in Old Orchard Beach. Gifford’s was also a winner at the Expo taking home first prize in the Sherbert category and second place in the Chocolate Ice Cream category.

Liquor License for Borealis
Last night the Portland City Council approved a liquor license for the Borealis Breads Bistro Bakery. The cafe is being built on Ocean Ave near the new elementary school.
Bonobo
Type A Diversions has reviewed Bonobo, a pizzeria in the West End.
“Their thin and crisp crusted pizzas feature fresh, unusual toppings; the restaurant itself is laid back, yet sophisticated enough for a casual date night on the town. Though I wouldn’t make Bonobo a regular destination, I certainly wouldn’t hesitate to dine there again when in the area.”

The Wine Bar will be the site of a Naked Shakespeare production Monday night by Acorn Productions. There will be training run for the Wine Flight 5k on Tuesday; trainees will be jogging to Public Market House. The next Piatto per Tutti cooking class is on Monday; the classses are taught by baker Stephen Lanzalotta. There will be wine tastings at OceanView in Falmouth and RSVP on Wednesday. Farmers’ Markets are taking place in Monument Square on Wednesday and at Deering Oaks Park on Saturday.
