Telling Room & Blueberries

The Food & Dining section in today’s Press Herald includes articles on the Telling Room’s newly published anthology of stories and poems about food by young writers. The article also includes some excerpts from the new book which is titled Can I Call You Cheesecake?

“When I was 9, I wished I could be a carrot,” writes Christina Murray, who attends Catherine McAuley High School. “I could’ve disappeared behind a cliff of meatloaf or under a river of gravy at the dinner table.”

and an article about blueberries appearance on a list of popular fruits and vegetables with a high risk of pesticide contamination.

This year’s Dirty Dozen list is a good tool for shoppers looking to avoid pesticides in their fruits and vegetables, but bad news for blueberries.

For the first time, the guide compiled by the Environmental Working Group includes the much-touted superfood on the list. The fruit clocks in at No. 5, ahead of nectarines and after apples.

Trader Joe's Update

The Press Herald has published an update on Trader Joe’s efforts to open a store in Portland.

The specialty food chain on Monday applied for city licenses to provide food service and sell beer and wine in the former Wild Oats store in Portland, according to City Clerk Linda Cohen.

That doesn’t mean that Trader Joe’s fanatics can finally exhale.

See The Forecaster for additional news coverage.

Puttanesca Taste Test

Mister Meatball has published a taste test between Micucci’s house brand puttanesca sauce and the puttanesca available from Pemberton’s, Scarpetta’s and Rao’s. (the taste test begins about halfway down the page)

1st Place. Micucci is lucky indeed to have hooked up with Lanzalotta (I know, I sound like I’m in the tank for this guy, but the truth is that I’ve never actually met the man). This is one very concentrated, complex flavor profile you got here, folks, loaded with good stuff, and plenty of tasty olives. If you’re looking for a jar of sauce to pour over pasta that needs no doctoring whatsoever, this is it.

Joint Review of PB&J Time, Market House Coffee and Kamasouptra

The May issue of The Bollard includes a joint review of Market House Coffee, Peanut Butter & Jelly Time and Kamasouptra. All three eateries are on the second floor of the Public Market House. Author Dan Zarin writes that his morning coffee “was among the best I’ve ever had in this city” and enthused over the quality and value of the options at Kamasouptra and PB&J Time before finishing with some simple instructions,

Dear reader, here are your marching orders: Go to the Public Market House and go upstairs. Go now. Go often. Eat. Drink. Tell your friends. If we, the food-and-leisure enthusiasts of Portland, lose this space, we may never see another like it again.
